Duas & Fazilat
There is no deed in Islam quite like sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. It is one of the very few acts where the command comes with a reason that fills the heart with awe: Allah Himself and His angels already do it. Every time a believer says "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad", they are joining an act that the angels themselves never stop performing. What could be more beloved to Allah ﷻ than that?
1.A Command Straight from the Quran
In Surah Al-Ahzab, Allah ﷻ says:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا — "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace." (Quran 33:56)
This is an extraordinary verse. For most commands, Allah simply says "do this". But here, He first tells us what He and His angels do — and then invites us to join them. Sending salawat is not just a recommended practice; it is a direct divine order, and every recitation is an act of obedience that carries the weight of this verse with it.
2.One Salawat, Ten Blessings
The Prophet ﷺ described the return on this one small act in a narration reported in Sahih Muslim: "Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him." Think about the maths of mercy here. You say one short sentence — "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad" — and Allah ﷻ, the King of kings, responds with ten blessings upon you.
And there is more. A narration reported in Sunan an-Nasa'i adds: "Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah will send ten blessings upon him, remove ten of his sins, and raise him ten degrees." Ten blessings, ten sins forgiven, ten ranks raised — for a single salawat. No other remembrance combines all three gifts in one breath.
The Prophet ﷺ also warned the opposite side of the coin, in a narration reported in Jami' at-Tirmidhi: "The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me." When you hear the name of the Messenger ﷺ, answer it — it costs nothing, and the loss of missing it is real.
3.The Special Link of Friday
Friday holds a special relationship with salawat. The Prophet ﷺ said, in a narration reported in Sunan Abi Dawud: "Increase your blessings upon me on Friday, for your blessings are presented to me." When his Companions asked how their blessings could be presented to him, he ﷺ explained that Allah has forbidden the earth from consuming the bodies of the Prophets.
So every Friday, there is a direct line of love: the blessings you send travel straight to your Prophet ﷺ. This is why Friday sunnahs — ghusl, Surah Al-Kahf, arriving early for prayer — pair so beautifully with abundant salawat. A Friday rich in darood is a Friday where your name is presented to the one whose intercession you hope for. Read more about the blessings of the day in our article on the sunnahs of Jummah.
4.Ubayy ibn Ka'b: The Dua That Handles Everything
Perhaps the most moving narration on this subject is the conversation between the Prophet ﷺ and Ubayy ibn Ka'b, reported in Jami' at-Tirmidhi. Ubayy asked the Prophet ﷺ: "How much of my dua should I devote to sending blessings upon you?" He suggested a quarter, then a third, then a half — each time the Prophet ﷺ replied that it was good, and more would be better for him. Finally Ubayy said: "Then I will devote all of my supplication to sending blessings upon you."
The Prophet ﷺ answered: "Then your concerns will be taken care of, and your sins will be forgiven."
Let that land. The man who gives his entire dua to salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ has both of life's needs covered — his worries handled, his sins forgiven. When you feel overwhelmed by problems and don't know what to ask for, there is always an answer: sit, send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and let the promise of this hadith carry the rest. It pairs perfectly with what we wrote about the keys to an accepted dua.
5.How to Send Darood the Right Way
The best form of salawat is the one the Prophet ﷺ himself taught — Durood Ibrahim, which we recite in every prayer:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
"O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim; indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious." — Sahih al-BukhariHere is a simple way to weave salawat into your day: 1. After every salah — send salawat at least once before rising. 2. On Fridays — increase it greatly, from morning to Maghrib. 3. When his name ﷺ is heard or read — answer immediately, never let it pass. 4. At a fixed daily count — ten, a hundred, or as many as your heart allows; the tasbih beads help. 5. At the start of your duas — salawat is the opener that lifts a supplication toward acceptance.
Send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ every single day, and watch how your heart changes: less anxiety, more love, and sins being erased while you simply speak words of honour for the one who carried your message. Start today — one salawat, ten blessings. 🤲
