Duas & Fazilat

Of all the acts of worship, one stands apart — not only by its reward, but by its position. The Prophet ﷺ called prayer the pillar of the entire religion. Everything a believer builds — fasting, charity, Hajj, good character — rests on this foundation. If the pillar cracks, the building trembles. Let us walk through the virtues of salah, so that the next time the adhan calls, your heart runs to it.

1.The Second Pillar, Right After the Shahadah

The Prophet ﷺ said, in a narration in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: "Islam is built on five: the testimony of faith, establishing prayer, paying zakah, performing pilgrimage to the House, and fasting Ramadan." Prayer is the first practical pillar — faith is declared once with the tongue, but prayer is declared five times a day with the body.

On the authority of Mu'adh ibn Jabal, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer and its top is jihad." — Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2616 (classed as authentic by al-Albani)

Think about the image: a building without a pillar collapses. Fasting, charity and good deeds are the walls — but without the five daily prayers, the structure has no support.

2.A Gift Delivered Straight From the Heavens

Here is what makes prayer unique: every other command — fasting, zakah, Hajj — was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ on earth. Prayer was not carried down by an angel. Allah took His Messenger ﷺ up to the heavens on the Night of Mi'raj and addressed him directly about it.

As recorded in the authentic Mi'raj narrations (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim), fifty prayers were first enjoined — then reduced to five, while the reward of fifty remained. No other act in Islam has an origin like this: prayer came down from above; everything else was commanded on earth.

3.Five Prayers That Wash Away Sins

The most hope-giving virtue of salah is its power to erase sins. The Prophet ﷺ asked his Companions, in a narration in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: "What would you think if there was a river at the door of one of you, and he bathed in it five times a day — would any dirt remain?" They said: "None." He ﷺ said: "That is the likeness of the five daily prayers — Allah erases sins through them."

Sahih Muslim adds: "The five daily prayers, and from one Friday prayer to the next, expiate the sins committed between them, so long as major sins are avoided." The river keeps flowing.

If you are struggling with a habit you want to leave, the answer is not despair — it is the next prayer, prayed with presence of heart. Prayer also opens the door of dua, as we explained in our article on the keys to an accepted dua.

4.The First Question on the Day of Judgment

On the Day when every deed is weighed, Allah will begin with one question. The Prophet ﷺ said, in a narration in Jami' at-Tirmidhi (also in Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan an-Nasa'i and Sunan Ibn Majah): "The first deed for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is complete, he has succeeded; if defective, he has failed and lost."

And then comes the mercy: whatever is lacking in the obligatory prayers will be completed from the servant's voluntary ones. Today's sunnah and nafl are tomorrow's repair kit.

The gravity of abandoning prayer is captured in another narration: "The covenant between us and them is the prayer; whoever abandons it has disbelieved" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Sunan an-Nasa'i, Sunan Ibn Majah). Scholars have differed on the exact ruling for one who leaves prayer — but that difference itself shows how central salah is: it is the covenant.

5.Prayer Shields You From Sin

Salah does not only erase past sins — it protects against future ones: "Inna al-salata tanha 'an al-fahsha'i wal-munkar" — "Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing" (Quran 29:45). A prayer offered with presence of heart is a shield: it is hard to walk out of a conversation with Allah and straight into disobedience.

That is why the Quran commands not just prayer, but guarding it: "Guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah with obedience" (Quran 2:238). Five daily appointments with Allah leave little room in the heart for what displeases Him.

6.Building Your Five-Prayer Habit

Here is a simple 3-2-1 method for unshakeable prayers. 3 anchors — tie each prayer to an existing routine: Fajr as the day begins, Dhuhr with your lunch break, Isha before sleep. 2 barriers removed — pray at the earliest time (prayer is "decreed upon the believers at fixed times", Quran 4:103), and keep wudu where you can; perfecting wudu, walking to the mosque and waiting for one prayer after another erase sins and raise ranks (Sahih Muslim). 1 partner — pray with your family, especially Fajr and Isha.

Make Prophet Ibrahim's dua your own: "Rabbi-j'alni muqimas-salati wa min dhurriyyati, Rabbana wa taqabbal du'a" — "My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants. Our Lord, accept my supplication" (Quran 14:40). If a Prophet asked for steadfastness in prayer, how much more should we? Start with the next prayer — on time, with wudu — and let the pillar hold your religion up. 🤲
