Quran
Every night, millions of Muslims lie down to sleep — and a few minutes before that, a small, powerful surah can change what awaits them in the grave. Surah Al-Mulk, the 67th chapter of the Quran, has only thirty verses. Yet the Prophet ﷺ told us it will intercede for the one who recites it until he is forgiven — and the companions called it al-mani'ah, "the protector," because it shields its reader from the torment of the grave.
It takes about five minutes to read. In this article, we look at its authentic virtues, the Prophet's ﷺ own nightly practice with it, and how you can make it a daily habit starting tonight.
1.What Is Surah Al-Mulk?
Surah Al-Mulk — "The Sovereignty" — is a Makki surah of thirty short verses. It opens with the majestic declaration: "Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent" (Quran 67:1). The surah proclaims Allah's absolute power over creation and warns of the Day of Judgment. Its themes are simple: Allah owns everything, sees everything, and will judge everyone — the perfect reminder for the last moments of the day.
تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Quran 67:12.Thirty Verses That Intercede for You
The first and most famous virtue of Surah Al-Mulk comes from a hadith of Abu Hurairah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is a surah of the Quran containing thirty verses that will intercede for a man until he is forgiven. It is the surah: 'Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion'" — Surah Al-Mulk (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891; Sunan Abi Dawud 1400; Sunan Ibn Majah 3786). At-Tirmidhi classed the hadith as hasan, and it was also authenticated by Ibn Taymiyyah and Shaykh al-Albani.
On the Day when every soul needs someone to speak for it, this surah — if you gave it your attention in this world — will plead before Allah until you are forgiven. Like Ayat al-Kursi, the greatest verse, it carries a special intercession — always by Allah's permission (Quran 2:255).
3.Al-Mani'ah: The Protector from the Torment of the Grave
The companion Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported: "Whoever recites 'Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion' — Surah Al-Mulk — every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to call it al-mani'ah — that which protects." (Sunan al-Nasa'i; classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib wa'l-Tarhib 1475.)
"Whoever recites it every night has done very well."— Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, on Surah Al-Mulk
The grave is the first station of the Hereafter. This surah is a nightly shield against its torment — for the one who reads it every night, believes in its message, and acts on its rulings.
4.The Prophet's ﷺ Nightly Habit
This was not a virtue the Prophet ﷺ only spoke about — he lived it. Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not go to sleep until he had recited Surah as-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk (reported by at-Tirmidhi). Night after night, the last words of his day were the words of this surah.
Surah Al-Mulk's protection is tied to a habit — reciting it regularly, especially at night before sleep. It is the Sunnah way of ending the day: a few minutes of the Quran that secure a shield for the night and for the grave.
5.Three Lessons Its Verses Teach Us
The test of life: "He who created death and life to test you — which of you is best in deeds" (Quran 67:2). Death and life are both a test, and the measure is not how much we do, but how good our deeds are.
Allah knows the hidden: "Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Aware?" (Quran 67:14) — a comfort for the sincere and a warning for the heedless. Trust in Him: "Say: He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied" (Quran 67:29) — the surah points the heart to tawakkul.
6.How to Make It Your Nightly Habit
Thirty verses take about five minutes. Here is a simple way to begin tonight:
Pick a fixed time — after Isha or in bed before sleep. Read with understanding — keep a translation nearby so the meaning enters your heart. Memorize gradually — two verses a day finishes it in about two weeks. Include your family — like Surah Al-Ikhlas, which equals a third of the Quran, it is short enough for kids to learn.
And do not stop at reading: the scholars remind us that its intercession belongs to the one who believes in its message, learns its lessons, and acts upon its rulings.
7.A Shield Within Reach
So few deeds promise so much for so little effort: five minutes a night for a surah that intercedes until you are forgiven and stands guard over your grave. The companions called it al-mani'ah, the Prophet ﷺ never slept without it, and tonight it is within your reach too. Open your mushaf, read Surah Al-Mulk before you sleep — and let its thirty verses keep you company when you need them most. Explore more Quranic reminders on the blog.
