Daily Life
How much of your week's worry and effort went into things that will still matter in fifty years? The new phone, the promotion, the next house: none are evil, but all are temporary. The person who knows this stops being the world's slave — and starts using it as the bridge it was meant to be.
1.Only "temporary enjoyment"
The Quran describes this life with one striking word — mata': fleeting provision, gone when the journey ends:
يَا قَوْمِ إِنَّمَا هَٰذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا مَتَاعٌ وَإِنَّ الْآخِرَةَ هِيَ دَارُ الْقَرَارِ
Quran 40:39 (Surah Ghafir)"O my people, this worldly life is only temporary enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter — that is the home of permanent settlement."
The word mata' means the supplies a traveller carries and leaves behind. Surah Al-Hadid sharpens the picture: this life is like rain that makes plants grow and please the farmer, "then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes scattered debris" (Quran 57:20). Green and admired — then dry, yellow, dust.
2.Be like a stranger or a traveller
Abdullah ibn Umar narrated that the Prophet ﷺ took him by the shoulder and said:
"Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." — Sahih al-Bukhari 6416
A stranger does not decorate a borrowed room; a traveller does not settle by the roadside. Ibn Umar took this to heart, saying: "In the evening, do not expect to see the morning, and in the morning, do not expect to see the evening."
The house is still bought — but it no longer buys you. The job is still worked — but it no longer owns your heart.
3.A finger dipped in the sea
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The example of this world compared to the Hereafter is like one of you dipping his finger into the sea — let him see what he brings out" (Sahih Muslim 2858).
Picture it: your fingertip, dipped and lifted, carrying a single glistening drop. That is the entire world — every empire, every treasure — beside the ocean of the Hereafter. We argue over the drop while ignoring the ocean.
4.Wealth: a test, not a trophy
The Quran never denies that wealth is beautiful — it simply puts it in its place: "Wealth and children are but adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward" (Quran 18:46). Gold, silver, fine horses, cattle, tilled land — "that is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return" (Quran 3:14).
The Prophet ﷺ warned that this adornment is a test: "Indeed, the world is sweet and green, and indeed Allah has entrusted you with stewardship over it, so He will see how you act" (Sahih Muslim 2742). Money is not condemned; it is watched.
5.A mosquito's wing
One narration reduces this entire world's value to almost nothing: "If the world were worth a mosquito's wing to Allah, He would not have given a disbeliever a drink of water from it" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2320, graded sahih by Al-Albani).
The promotion you lost sleep over, the house your neighbour built, the follower count that keeps you refreshing your phone — all of it weighs less than a mosquito's wing. And the Prophet ﷺ gave the formula for peace: "Whoever makes the Hereafter his concern, Allah makes his heart rich and organizes his affairs, and the world comes to him despite its reluctance. Whoever makes the world his concern, Allah puts poverty between his eyes, disorganizes his affairs, and nothing of the world comes to him except what was decreed for him" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2465, graded hasan).
Aim at the eternal, and the temporary follows as a bonus; aim at the temporary, and you may lose both.
6.Don't abandon the world — aim it at the Hereafter
Islam is not monasticism; the balanced way is: "But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and yet, do not forget your share of the world" (Quran 28:77). Your share is allowed. It is simply not the goal.
Here are five daily habits that keep the Hereafter in your sights without abandoning the world:
- Start the day with the reminder. Before checking your phone, read one verse about the Hereafter — even just Quran 40:39. The first thought of the day sets its direction.
- Turn one worldly act into worship. Do one daily task — work, cooking, errands — with a conscious intention for Allah. Intention converts routine into reward.
- Give something away first. Daily charity breaks the world's grip on your heart. Read also: Surah Al-Mulk: The Surah That Shields You in the Grave.
- Use your five before your five. Youth, health, wealth, free time and life itself will all run out — use them while you have them. See Five Before Five: A Timeless Hadith on Time and Blessings.
- End the day with accounting. Before sleep, ask: what did I send forward today? The traveller checks his provisions; the believer checks his deeds.
The world is a bridge, not a home — cross it with your eyes on the other side. More reflections on the blog.
Dua: O Allah, make the Hereafter our greatest concern. Grant us contentment with Your decree, and let us use it in Your obedience. Ameen.
